I have spent the last four years doing wedding photography and I am often asked questions regarding engagement sessions. Here are some of the most popular questions that I receive about engagement sessions. If you have any other questions, ask in the comments or use the contact form!
Why would I need an engagement session?
Engagement sessions aren’t an absolute necessity, but many couples find it important to have one. Engagement sessions give you great photos to use for your save the dates, invitations, and other printed media. Engagement sessions also give you a great opportunity to hang out with your photographer. From a photographers perspective, it’s great to get to know the couple, and see how they are in front of the camera prior to the actual wedding. You may also be more comfortable around your photographer(s) if you’ve already done a session with them prior to your wedding.
What should we wear?
Wear clothes that you love, and that are appropriate for the location. If you are avid mountain climbers and taking photos on a hike, formal wear may not be the best choice! My standard suggestion is dressing up just a little bit, taking the location into consideration. Make sure that you love what you’re wearing, and that it looks good on you. Coordinate your clothes, but you don’t need to wear matching outfits. 🙂 If you’ll have the ability to change, make sure to bring multiple outfits for several different looks during your shoot.
Where should we shoot our engagement session?
Do you have a location that is important to you? Maybe the place that you and your fiance met, the location of your first date, etc. If not, find a place that you both love! Try a beach or lake location if you love the water. You can go downtown, to a park, to a barn, there are many possibilities! If you need ideas, again, ask your photographer!
What time should we take the photos?
I like to take engagement photos about an hour and a half or so before sunset. Skilled photographers are able to work in any light situation, but you just can’t beat the “golden hour” light before sunset!
Those are the most common questions that I get regarding engagement sessions. If you have any questions about the post, or if you are looking for a wedding photographer, contact me!
